Family Time Fridays

What we did for Thanksgiving
Well, what to say…the Officer is {ahem} unavailable this weekend.  Which means that yes, he’s not at our disposable on Friday, too.  So instead of a fun, Christmas-y post {ideas included: the family putting up the tree.  So far we have lights on it.  Or the kids helping with the outside—I put my wreath on the door, and a friend’s borrowed snowman mat out [[thanks, Kelly!]].  Or all of us doing any number of traditional, Christmas-oriented family activities}, I will regale you with how our Thanksgiving day went.  Yeah, it’s a little past that season, but I think the holidays have a tendency of bleeding into one another a bit anyway.

For the actual day of Thanksgiving, we got to have all my family (Mom, Dad, Sis, & Bro) here.  And instead of planting ourselves on the couch to watch a thoroughly disappointing game while the turkey roasted, we played a few of our own.  They were all Minute-to-Win-It type games; and were all do-able with a 9 and 7 year old.  While some of them were a little, ehrm, risqué [at least for my family’s dirty minds], I can say that I haven’t laughed that hard in a loooong time.  And even though the boys won, everyone had a great time.
Because I vowed certain pictures would never make it to the internet (we called an FB ban immediately) I didn’t even take any snaps with my camera {phone}.  Instead, I’ll include links below to the games we played.  I think a gathering like this would be a fun diversion to a Christmas Eve day, if your family gets together then.  Best to keep everyone distracted so that time moves quickly—and to make some memories while the littles are waiting.  Though, as a Mom, I cherish these laughing-so-hard-I-can’t-breathe memories far more than any gift.  I’m sure you do, too.

Games: All the links below have some great photos for visual explanation of the games.  Get your competitive juices flowing and check them out...
  • Water Bottle Knock Down [calebandshelley]: using a tennis ball, housed in panty hose which are worn on the competitors' heads, the players try to knock down their row (we used 6) of water bottles before their opponent and under 60 seconds.
  • Pom-pom Relay [modified from Fruit Loop race] –[calebandshelley]: using a straw, players move a pom-pom (from the crafting aisle) into a cup about 6 feet from the starting position.  Only one player can move the pom-pom at a time.  Every drop results in beginning again at the starting position.  Beat the opposing team and the 60 second time limit.
  • How’s It Hanging [Invite and Delight]:  using a banana, tied by string to the players' waist, the player must guide an orange to a hula hoop about 4 feet from the starting position in under 60 seconds.
  • A Bit Dicey – [Invite and Delight]: Holding a craft stick in one's mouth, a player must make a tower of 6 die before their opponent does, or before the clock runs out (again, 60 seconds).
  • Tear It Up [Invite and Delight]: Players shoot rubber bands at toilet paper, suspended from a rod (we used a broom stick) and attached to an empty soda bottle.  The first to break through the toilet paper wins.  Players race one another and the clock.

There’s even a site, parties4me, that has an entire challenge filled with Christmas themed games.  Maybe next year…
Don’t let all the holiday baubles get you down, have some fun this weekend!
